  Course Description |

Architects tend to have a high estimation of architecture’s standing among the several design professions and creative disciplines. Current figures such as David Adjaye have repeated the old idea that architecture is the mother of the arts. A century and a half ago Frank Lloyd Wright made the same claim: architecture is ‘the mother art. Without an architecture of our own our civilization has no soul.’ One suspects that people outside the field would agree to a high rank, if pressed for an evaluation. Thus, it is hardly surprising that architects have traditionally conferred subordinate standing on similar arts, landscape architecture and urbanism, for example, because their professional history is much shorter than that of architecture, and their bodies of theory correspondingly slighter. Likewise for painting and sculpture.

But shouldn’t we recognize that matters seem to be changing these days?Today, many in and outside architecture maintain that the traditional subordination of related arts is no longer acceptable. The emergence of landscape urbanism, for example, suggests that urban design is a field with equivalent standing to architecture—not subordinate but sibling. Recent arguments for urban-landscape ecology suggest that thinking about landscape (in its several senses) will enable architects and planners to reconceive the nature and task of designing buildings and cities, as if the whole of which buildings are part is territorial, environmental, or topographical; neither only nor essentially architectural. Where would early 20th century architecture be without 20th century painting? Frank Gehry’s buildings are widely discussed as sculptural.

This course proposes to reconsider the ranking and division of the disciplines, not so much to rearrange them, but to think again about what is and is not properly architectural. Key topics will be the idea ofthe image in the different arts, the roles ofcraft and method, and modes ofexpression and communication in the various arts.

Professor David Leatherbarrow is a scholar and professor in the theory and history of architecture, with specific emphasis on their contribution to architectural design. He teaches in the Internationalization Demonstration School of Architecture, Southeast University. Since 1984 he has also been teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. Within history, theory, and design, he is known internationally for his contributions to ideas and historical developments of architectural design, gardens and landscapes, and, most recently, on the impact of contemporary technology on architecture. All of David Leatherbarrow’s work in scholarship examines two essential problems or topics in architectural design: the architectural site (landscape or urban) and architectural construction. These two topics are unavoidably commonplace in contemporary design practice. They are also in need of reconsideration, in light of changes in contemporary culture and society. To date David Leatherbarrow has published 12 scholarly books and over one hundred and twenty scholarly articles. In addition to his scholarship, Leatherbarrow is highly respected internationally as an educator, having won numerous awards for his teaching, the most recent of which is the 2020 Topaz Medallion awarded by AIA/ACSA, the highest honor given to an educator in architecture.
