A SEU-NU Joint International Conference-Third Symposium | In a Geographic Perspective: Architecture, Planning and Landscape

In a Geographic Perspective: Architecture, Planning and Landscape

The gaining of geographic knowledge has played a significant role in shaping our understandings of the world, the environment and ourselves; the formation of modern disciplines of architecture, town planning and landscape, internally and externally, has also benefited from the growth of our geographic knowledge; a broader definition of architecture today can stretch further, to a wider frame of questions concerning nature and the cosmos.

In recent design thinking, the publication of S, M, L, XL by Rem Koolhaas and his team in 1995 challenged regionalisms of the time, explored architectural entanglement with globalization, and formulated an architecture of the ‘extra-large’. Thirty years on, the changing conditions today arguably reveal its underlying insight even more clearly: architecture’s engagement with geographic conditions of any scales – small or (extra) large. With today’s complex issues in mind, we need to examine architecture’s entanglement with the geographic, concerning earth, planet, topography, and landscape, of all scales. There has been, perhaps, a geographical turn in architectural history and theory in the last decade: combining cultural geographies and cultural theories, understanding architecture in terms of infrastructures and landscapes, highlighting forces of colonization and extraction, engaging with mappings and cartographies. Koolhaas invoked geographies not just of globalism, but also contextual forms and forces. Today – in a time of ecological crisis and geopolitical reformulation – the problematic of geography in and beyond architecture prompts careful examination.

The SN Forum, jointly organized by Newcastle UK and the Southeast China, aims to examine contemporary conditions of ‘architecture and knowledge’ in three thematic areas – ‘history’, ‘geography’ and ‘visuality’. Having successfully hosted the first and second symposiums in 2024 and 2025 on ‘history’, we are now organizing the third in 2026. This symposium aims to engage globalist, regionalist, ecological and post-colonial thinking by focusing on the geographic in architecture. We hope to explore geographic problems, conditions, thematics, methodologies, conceptualisations and imaginations in architecture and beyond. We warmly invite you to share studies and reflections on issues including but not limited to:

· Topography and regionalism

· Landscape through the urban and the rural

· Borders, divisions and transnationalism

· Geographies of mining, agriculture and production

· Extraction and colonialism

· Architecture of infrastructures

· Scales in architecture and the built and/or natural environment

· Mappings and cartographies (of space of all scales, in modern or traditional ways)

· Conceptualization on space, land, resource and (non) human construction
