主旨 / THEME
Architecture emerges from—and in turn bears witness to—the cultural practices through which societies imagine origins, establish systems of measure, and fabricate environments capable of sustaining shared life. Through such practices, human communities give spatial and symbolic form to memory, authority, and collective aspiration. In periods of profound transformation—as today, amid rapid technological development, environmental uncertainty, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on architectural practice and education—the cultural foundations of architecture call for renewed examination.
“Cultural Foundations: Origins, Measures, and Fabrications” brings together scholars and practitioners to consider architecture not primarily as object or technique, but as a mode of cultural practice. The conference invites contributions that address beginnings understood as acts of interpretation rather than historical givens; measures understood as forms of judgment through which order becomes intelligible; and fabrications understood as processes through which material and symbolic worlds are continually produced and reconfigured. These themes are intended both to resonate with enduring architectural concerns and to encourage new lines of investigation across disciplinary and intellectual boundaries.
Held on the occasion of the centenary of Joseph Rykwert’s birth (1926–2024) and hosted at Southeast University in Nanjing—home to the Asian Architectural Archive Center, where his personal library is being permanently housed—the conference is conceived not simply as an act of commemoration, but as an opportunity to engage the questions that animated his scholarship. Among the most influential architectural historians and theorists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Rykwert consistently challenged reductive, technocratic, and stylistic understandings of architecture. Across writings ranging from studies of the primitive hut and ancient ritual to reflections on modern urbanism, he articulated architecture as a fundamentally cultural practice through which societies give spatial, symbolic, and institutional form to their understanding of the world. Drawing on anthropology, history, philosophy, and architectural theory, his work demonstrated how built form mediates between nature and culture, event and institution, memory and invention. Architecture thus emerges as a medium through which cultures establish order, transmit meaning across generations, and negotiate moments of crisis and transformation.
Participants are invited to approach Rykwert’s writings as points of departure rather than objects of exegesis. A book, essay, or even a brief passage may serve as the basis for arguments that extend, reconsider, or critically test the lines of inquiry he helped to establish. In this sense, the conference seeks to be at once celebratory and forward looking: acknowledging an intellectual inheritance while pursuing what remains unresolved or newly visible under present conditions.
By convening within an archive that both preserves and activates Rykwert’s intellectual legacy, the conference affirms his central insight that architecture participates in the making of culture rather than merely reflecting prevailing taste or technological capacity. Architecture is thus understood as an ongoing cultural project—one in which foundations are continually reinterpreted, measures recalibrated, and the environments through which societies understand themselves continually refabricated.
