Main research directions


(1)History of architecture: Linking ancient and modern researches on architecture history by attaching importance to the combination of theory and practice and by adhering to the unity of knowledge and practice. “History of Chinese Architecture” is a national level course and one of the first national level resource sharing courses. The Institute takes a lead in initiating the International Seminar on Teaching and Research of World Architectural History”, “National Seminar on Teaching of Architectural History and Theory ” and “Architecture History Teaching Observation and Exchange Conference”, and has established a series of brand conferences in China. The Institute has published national level textbooks on Chinese and foreign architectural history, and is in charge of the compilation of “Design on Architectural Conservation”, the authoritative “Architectural Design Information Set, Volume 8”.

(2) Architectural theory: the Institute has systematically erected an international collaboration platform, gradually forming its own series of research of modern architectural theory by taking establishment of the international model school as an opportunity and by taking architectural issues of modernity and the issues in China as research object. We have published the reference book for postgraduate study Modern Architectural Theory (second edition), Architecture Studies (01, 02), and have initiated the translation and publication of AS Readings for contemporary architectural theory, such as Words and Buildings, Topographical Stories and other masterpieces.

(3) Heritage conservation: with over 90 years’ excellent inheritance, the Institute keeps pace with the times to serve to society, and develops at the strategy and theory and at technology and practice levels by taking a lead in carrying out study on preventive conservation in China. The Institute has published the Selected Works on Heritage Conservation by Teachers from School of Architecture, Southeast University (1927-2017) in both Chinese and English.

(4) Asian studies: by inheriting, promoting and expanding Asian studies, and by expanding cross-border fields, an international cooperation platform is established, which promotes and deepens the study on history and theories associated with cities and architecture in Asia. The Institute takes a lead in proposing East Asian Architectural research alliance together with scholars at home and abroad to initiate a series of international conferences on studies on East Asian architectural culture, which has produced international impacts; at present, the Institute mainly carries out cooperative research with relevant experts and programs in the United States, Japan, India, Nepal, etc.
