1. Education objectives

To cultivate the leading talents in the future architecture industry with broad international vision and keen sense of nativeness, as well as thinking ability, practice ability and innovation ability, with the core concepts of developing “excellent, internationalized and research-oriented” talents in order to adapt to the development trend of architecture in the era of globalization and the situation of socio-economic and cultural development in China.


2. Teaching architecture

Construction of a knowledge module based on the organic integration of 3 majors: architecture, urban and rural planning and landscape architecture; sharing the basic platform of major categories by junior undergraduates, and advanced disciplinary crossing for senior undergraduates; by adopting the design as backbone and enhancing the horizontal connection among technology, history theory and media is strengthened, establishment of a hierarchical talent cultivation structure with “modular integration of courses, cross penetration of four categories of curriculum groups and three majors”.


2.1 Course structure

Broadened foundation (grades 1-2): a professional basic education platform jointly constructed and shared by architecture, urban and rural planning and landscape architecture;

Enhanced backbone (throughout grade + 3): advanced backbone series are formed with the design core courses throughout the undergraduate education in grades 1-5 and by integrating the curriculum groups of technology category and humanities category;

Expanded frontier (grades 4-5): frontier vision is expanded on the interdisciplinary platform, and comprehensive research-oriented teaching in multiple directions is strengthened.


2.2 Gradient setting for design studio in each grade

Grades 1-2: basic education platform for categories of architecture, urban and rural planning and landscape architecture; “cross-discipline, cross-scale and cross-medium” teaching and “shared-foundation and multi-topic” teaching emphasizing disciplinary integration.

Grade 3: deepened education platform in architecture major, and integration and advancement of architectural design, history, technology and practice.

Grades 4-5: interdisciplinary education platform in several majors, highlighting the high-level, expandable and interdisciplinary frontier crossing.

2.3 Relationship between the design course and other courses

As the backbone, the design core course runs throughout undergraduate education in grades 1-5, which integrates various knowledge modules of basic courses, elective courses, practice, principles and major backbones of major categories, integrates curriculum groups of technology, history theory and medium categories, and crosses these disciplines: architecture, urban and rural planning and landscape architecture, thus forming a hierarchical advanced main course series.


2.4 Relationship between the basic design for major categories and the professional education in three disciplines in grade 1/2

A jointly constructed and shared basic platform is provided for advancement and deepening of education in architecture, urban and rural planning and landscape architecture by condensing the core basic knowledge and common knowledge module based on the disciplinary generality and difference among these 3 disciplines according to the teaching laws of the design major and by integrating the general knowledge, historical basis, technical basis, subject introduction, art and medium courses, with the design basis as the core.

Introduction to graduate education

1. Introduction to discipline

The architecture discipline of Southeast University, founded in 1927, is the origin of modern architecture education in China. Adhering to the motto of"striving for perfection" its development continues to lead the higher education on architecture in China, and has produced major international influence. This discipline is a first-level disciplinary doctorate-accredited field and a first-level disciplinary national key discipline, built discipline, which was rated as an A+ discipline in 2016 discipline evaluation (tied for first place in China).

2. Teaching team

It includes 4 academicians, 2 Yangtze River scholars, 1 national outstanding youth, 1 expert on the thousand talents program, 1 young Yangtze River scholar and 1 national famous teacher. There are also 29 doctoral tutors and 75 postgraduate tutors. In 2018, the teaching team won the first prize of the graduate education achievement award of the Chinese Society of Academic Degrees and Graduate Education.

Education type and framework

1.Education on master's degree

1.In this discipline, master’s degree in architecture (0851) is awarded to specialized graduates, and doctor’s degree in engineering (0813) is awarded to academic graduates.

2.Degree education combines the tutorial system with the curriculum system. The curriculum system aims to give stress on the backbone, while achieving clear framework, explicit graduation and disciplinary coordination. It focuses on cultivating and establishing major courses of specialized theory and design: all majors in the discipline jointly build the specialized basis courses as the core courses for graduate teaching, including a theoretical course Modern Architecture Theory, a method course Literature Reading and Thesis Writing and a design course Architectural Design, and each major focuses on building a core specialized course. Every graduate must take at least one cutting-edge all-English course, supplemented by various optional course modules.

3.The education of specialized master of architecture is performed with the double-tutor system, with the tutor in the school as the main tutor and the tutor in the enterprise as the auxiliary tutor. The tutor in the enterprise is responsible for guiding the graduates in specialized practice (enterprise internship), and participating in the whole process from proposal, guidance and defense of the dissertation (design).

2.Education on doctor's degree

Doctor's degree in engineering (0813) is awarded in doctoral education program in this discipline.

The students are required to have solid and broad basic theory of the first-level discipline and systematic and comprehensive specialized knowledge of the second-level discipline of architecture. This discipline aims to cultivate academic leaders with international academic vision, international affairs rules, close link to academic frontier, innovative scientific research ability and professional skills in architectural design and its theory, architecture history and theory, heritage protection, architectural technology science and other disciplines, who can demonstrate comprehensive quality and sense of social responsibility.
