The City: from Growth to Regeneration
Since its beginning until 150 years ago, for 5000 years the city has been bordered by walls. Each city had its own social and physical identity. City planning tools have been redefined and implemented starting from 150 years ago. After the II World War, urban growth underwent a tremendous acceleration. Cities reached a size never seen before under no comprehensive control. Cities appear with no borders and no shared identity, but new names and definitions. However, they also start to be characterized by hard to solve problems, for instance, traffic congestion, pollution, segregation, etc. What to do for a better city to live? The second part will present some study cases and, in particular, the Recentralization Plan Prof. Folin is working on for the city of Verona.
From Geography to Object
“From geography to object” face the theme of the difference of scales that an architect must deal with during his professional life.
If in one side it seems that the society and clients (public or private ones) constantly ask for a more and more specialized professional person, on the other side the same clients ask for an consultant that “solve problems” that occur in everyday life, both in a very simple or highly complex situation. In this “gap” (or apparent contradictions) architect can be the professional figure needed because the balance of his knowledge between humanities and scientific ones.
The lecture will show some examples that goes from the territorial and landscaping scale to industrial design of urban furniture objects that shapes the perception of our contemporary cities.
