PREMISE
Contemporary understandings of tectonics need to be expanded. Ironically, such an expansion may result from a return to the subject’s beginnings. Practical Aesthetics was the field in which Gottfried Semper situated tectonics. Of course he had “aesthetic” issues in mind, beauty, perceptual meaning, and representation, but also several dimensions of architecture’s “practicality,” its constructed reality, its suitability to contemporary culture, and its topographical specificity. This conference seeks to extend current understanding of tectonics by questioning common wisdom and demonstrating how the narrow preoccupation with structure, construction, and materials can—indeed must—embrace cultural concerns of purpose, location, and beauty.
TOPICS
The papers and discussions of the conference will address three key topics:
1. Beauty:a practical aesthetics must make arguments and proposals for elegant and refined solutions, construction detailing and material finishing may serve both utilitarian and aesthetic ends
2. Location: every work that’s built is built some-where, tectonics properly understood is always place-bound, climates and atmospheres extend tectonic understanding into topography
3. Purpose: decisions about suitability, in view of cultural patterns, are part of the rationality of tectonic solutions
