Sun Shijie received his PhD in urban planning from Southeast University in 2002. He is a member of the Professional Committee on Resilient Cities of the Chinese Society For Urban Studies, a council member of the Jiangsu Urban Planning Research Association, a deputy director of the Jiangsu Urban Planning Research Association's Professional Committee on Industrial Parks and Innovative Spaces, a member of the Jiangsu Urban Planning Research Association's Professional Committee on Urban Renewal, and a deputy chairman of the Jiangsu Exploration and Design Association's Urban Design Working Committee. He is mainly engaged in urban planning and design related to the urban renewal, as well as theoretical research and teaching of the regeneration of urban built environment.

His research focuses on urban regeneration, urban design, urban transportation and spatial development. he has led one NSFC funded program and participated in four NSFC funded programs. He won the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education for Higher Education and the Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Award, several national or provincial awards for excellent planning and design. He was awarded the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in 2018.
