“LIANGHEKOU” first released in Arsenale and Giardini, La Biennale di Venezia, is now available online for global visitors.
Lianghekou, located in Xuan’en County, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, China, was a commercial village along the ancient Salt Road which was a significant economic link in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The well-preserved one-hundred-meter street at the core of this village typically embodies the tectonic characteristics of Gan-lan wooden construction system, especially Tujia tradition of stilt house along this historic path. As a result of rapid urbanization and population emigration, the once thriving village, among many in the region of Wuling Mountains, is suffering from the economic decline and social exclusion.
At present, the once-hidden Salt Road valley, where Lianghekou is located, is embracing an opportunity of attracting the attention from the out world on account of the rapid development of the national traffic network nearby and the drastic increase of domestic tourism in China. How to regenerate this declined village along the ancient Salt Road and convert it to be a vigorous place for people to RE-LIVING-TOGETHER? How to address an architectural resilience that supports the economic advantages of tourism development, while celebrating the authentic values and cultural identities of its historical legacies? This exhibition is not only concerning the exciting, unique project itself, but also aims to explore a feasible solution to the common challenge faced by human settlements with cultural heritages worldwide.
