Tom Verebes
导师Kristof Crolla, Wendy Fok, Daniel Gillen, Soomeen Hahm, Immanuel Koh, Nathan Melenbrink, Wang Xin, Xu Feng, Zhang Shuojiong

AA Shanghai Visiting School
AA Shanghai 2012

Title Evolutionary Urbanism
City, Country, Continent Shanghai, China, Asia
Dates 20-28 July 2012
Location/School The University of Hong Kong Shanghai Study Centre, Shanghai
Directed by Tom Verebes
Tutors: Kristof Crolla, Wendy Fok, Daniel Gillen, Soomeen Hahm, Immanuel Koh, Nathan Melenbrink, Wang Xin, Xu Feng, Zhang Shuojiong

This sixth consecutive AA Shanghai Summer School will be hosted at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Architecture Shanghai Study Centre. As an intensive nine-day studio-based course, we will investigate new computational design approaches in architecture and urbanism, within the context of Shanghai, one of the world’s most rapidly growing, emblematic twenty-first century cities. This year’s topic for the summer school concerns the challenges facing the megalopolis of Shanghai as it feeds the insatiable demand for land for urban growth, expansion and densification. We will experiment with technologies associated to evolutionary approaches to urbanism and architecture, through a variety of time-based, dynamic models of complex growth and change. Design proposals will negotiate the paradoxical dynamic forces of urban development and environmental change.

The course will be taught by tutors from the AA School, HKU, and other visitors, in a two-part programme. Over the first three days of the workshop, computational design systems will be introduced in a series of intensive ‘tooling-up’ sessions as the basis for investigating associative design concepts and methodologies. The aim of these design exercises is to introduce expertise in generative, algorithmic and parametric design approaches. In a second stage of the workshop, students will develop design proposals responding to a shared studio brief focusing on developing new models of urban evolution. Students will apply code-based modelling, simulation and fabrication techniques, towards multiple, variable and recursive prototypes for a range of urban systems, driven by scenarios of future incremental, adaptive growth and change.

Alongside studio-based design tutorials, seminars, and a series of lectures, a public symposium will address contemporary topics related to the theme of the workshop.

Eligibility
The workshop is open to current architecture, urban planning, landscape and design students, phd candidates and young professionals. All applicants should submit a CV and portfolio. The following software applications are recommended but are not required: Rhino (with Grasshopper and other plug-ins), Rhinoscript, Maya, Processing, Autocad, Adobe Creative Suite.

Applications
The deadline for applications is 13 July 2012. Application forms and additional information are available online at: www.aaschool.ac.uk/shanghai and applications can be submitted to: visitingschool@aaschool.ac.uk.
